Mechanism of Action of Antimicrobial Agents

Antimicrobial Agents Act by following Mechanisms:

Antibiotic-Smaller

Inhibition of Cell Wall Synthesis:
Examples are: Penicillins, Cephalosporins, Bacitracin and Vencomycin

Inhibition of the Cytoplasmic Membrane:
Examples:
Polymixin, collistin, polyene, antifungal antibiotics

Inhibition of protein synthesis and impairment of function of ribosomes:
Examples:
Aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, Macrolide antibiotics, and lincomycin.

Interference in transcription/translation of genetic information:
Examples:
Quinolones, metronidazole

Antimetabolite actions:
Examples:
Sulfonamides, trimethoprim

Binding to viral enzymes essential for DNA synthesis:
Examples:
Vidarabine and acyclovir
