Bad Breath Causes, Prevention and Treatment

Bad Breath which is known as Halitosis in Medical terms is a condition in which there is foul smell from the mouth. Bad breath is condition that every one wants to prevent as it can harm your personality.

Causes of Bad Breath? 

There are many causes of Bad Breath. It can be due to poor Oral hygiene or it can be due to other systemic Diseases. It can be be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits.

How Does Your Food affect Breath?

As we know the process of break down starts in your mouth. These foods are digested and absorbed into the bloodstream, they are eventually carried to your lungs and given off in your breath. So If you eat foods with strong odors (such as garlic or onions) can effect your Breath. Brushing and flossing — even mouthwash — merely covers up the odor temporarily of these type of foods. The odor will not go away completely until the foods have passed through your body.

How Poor Habits Cause Bad Breath?

It is necessary to have a good oral hygiens. As If you don’t brush and floss teeth daily,the food particles can remain in your mouth, that will promote bacterial growth between teeth, around the gums, and on the tongue. This causes bad breath. Antibacterial mouth rinses also can help reduce bacteria.

In addition, odor-causing bacteria and food particles can cause bad breath if dentures are not properly cleaned.

People who smock or chew tobacco-based products can have Bad Breath, stain your teeth, reduce your ability to taste foods, and irritate your gums.

What are the Health Problems that can cause Bad Breath?

If you have persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth, it can be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. Bacteria cause the formation of toxins to form, which irritate the gums. If gum disease continues untreated, it can damage the gums and jawbone.

Among the other dental causes of bad breath are poorly fitting dental appliances, yeast infections of the mouth, and dental caries (cavities).

The medical condition such as dry mouth (also known as xerostomia) can cause bad breath. Saliva is necessary to moisten the mouth, neutralize acids produced by plaque, and wash away dead cells that accumulate on the tongue, gums, and cheeks. If not removed, these cells decompose and can cause bad breath. Dry mouth may be a side effect of various medications, salivary gland problems, or continuous breathing through the mouth.

Other general Health problems such as pneumonia or bronchitis, chronic sinus infections, postnasal drip, diabetes, chronic acid reflux, and liver or kidney problems can contribute to Bad Breath.

How to Prevent Bad Breath? 

There are many ways to prevent Bad Breath. Some of it are as follows:

1:  You have to take of your Oral Hygiene. You should Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque. Brush teeth after you eat (keep a toothbrush at work or school to brush after lunch). One more important thing to mention here is your Tongue, don’t forget to brush the tongue. Replace your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months or after an illness. Use floss or an interdental cleaner to remove food particles and plaque between teeth once a day. Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash twice a day.

If you are Denture wearer then you should remove Denture at night and clean it thoroughly before being placed in your mouth the next morning.

2: Try to avoid smoking and chewing the Tobacco. You can ask your Dentist how to kick the Habit of Smoking.

3: Try to Drink lots of Water as it will keep your mouth moist most of the Time. you can also use sugarless Gums or Candies. As it increases the flow of saliva so it will wash all Bacteria that can cause Bad breath. Gums with Xylitol are Preferable.

4: Try to avoid foods which you think can cause Bad breath. Make a list of that Foods and discus it with Your Dentist. Also make a list of Drugs that you use, as some drugs can cause Xerostomia.

5: Try to visit your Dentist regularly to have a better Oral condition. You should visit your Dentist at Least 2 times a year. Dentist will clean your Teeth, treat periodontal Diseases and  dry mouth, or other problems that may be the cause of bad mouth odor.

How can I treat Bad Breath? 

If you have Bad Breath, you can visit your Dentist as He can determine the cause of Bad Breath and can treat the problem of Bad breath. Your Dentist will rule out the cause. If the cause is not due to Oral Hygiene then your Dentist can refer you to family Doctor or specialist to determine the cause of Odor due to systemic Diseases.

What Products Can I Use to get rid of Bad Breath?

You can use An antiseptic mouthwash that can eliminate bacteria  causing bad breath. Or you can Ask your dentist about which product is best for you.
